Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2042

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا

O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us.

Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waghfir lana warhamna

When to Read

This dua is recited before partaking in any meal, especially when eating communally with family, friends, or fellow Muslims. It's an excellent practice before breaking fast together, or before a gathering where food is shared. The intention is to seek Allah's blessings on the food and express gratitude for His provision, fostering a sense of brotherhood and shared reliance on Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a mindful heart. It is typically recited before starting to eat, while gathered around the food. The wording is simple and encompasses gratitude, seeking forgiveness, and requesting mercy, all of which are essential for maintaining good relations and acknowledging Allah's favor. Raising the hands is not a established sunnah for this specific dua, but reciting it with attentive presence is key.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua before a meal is a beautiful way to ensure that the food itself becomes a source of blessing. It reminds us that all provision comes from Allah (SWT) and encourages us to be grateful. When shared in a communal setting, it elevates the act of eating from a mere physical necessity to a spiritual one, reinforcing bonds of brotherhood and unity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that 'No one has ever eaten a better meal than that which he ate from his own earnings. And the Prophet of Allah Dawud (David) ate from his own earnings.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4048). This points to the value of seeking blessings in our provisions, which this dua directly addresses. It also instills humility and dependence on Allah, crucial for maintaining strong relationships within the community.

Source & Authentication

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never criticized food. If he fancied it, he ate it; otherwise, he left it. [Sahih Muslim 2042]. While this hadith focuses on the Prophet's ﷺ etiquette with food, the principle of seeking blessings (barakah) in what we eat is fundamental. Other related narrations encourage supplication before eating, such as the dua before starting any meal: 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah). The more comprehensive dua cited above encompasses thanking Allah for the provision and seeking His forgiveness and mercy, making it highly suitable for communal settings where unity and gratitude are emphasized.
