Dua for the Blessings of Allah on Our Food

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3767

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and save us from the punishment of the Fire.

Bismillahi, Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

When to Read

Recited before starting to eat. It is also recommended to say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before each bite or mouthful, especially if one forgets at the beginning.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of mind, remembering that the food itself is a blessing from Allah. It's a humble request for both sustenance in this life and protection in the hereafter.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates gratitude for Allah's provision and a prayer for protection from Hellfire. By invoking Allah's name and asking for blessings, we acknowledge Him as the true source of sustenance and seek His mercy. The inclusion of 'wa qina 'adhaban-nar' (and save us from the punishment of the Fire) reminds us that even worldly blessings should be coupled with a focus on our eternal well-being.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mughaffal: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "If any one of you says 'Bismillah' when beginning to eat, and says it at the beginning of the meal, and then forgets to say it until he has taken his first bite, when the Satan is present with him, he should say 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah). This will drive the Satan away from him. And if he takes his first bite and says 'Bismillah', this will be a protection for him and for the food that he eats. If anyone takes a mouthful and forgets to say 'Bismillah', when he remembers he should say 'Bismillah' and eat it. This will be a protection for him and for the food that he eats. And if anyone eats food and does not say 'Bismillah', Satan will eat along with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah, the Exalted, may He be blessed and may He be exalted, when He takes any food, He is pleased with it, and when He has taken it, He is pleased with it. And when any one of you takes a mouthful and forgets to say 'Bismillah', when he remembers, he should say 'Bismillah' and eat it. This will be a protection for him and for the food that he eats. And if anyone eats food and does not say 'Bismillah', Satan will eat along with him.' And it was narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and save us from the punishment of the Fire.'"
