This dua is recited at the beginning of a meal, preferably when eating with family or in a gathering. It's a beautiful way to usher in the blessings of the food and acknowledge Allah's provision before partaking.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity before you begin to eat. It can be said aloud or softly, depending on the situation, but the intention in the heart is paramount. It's a practice that connects us to the Sunnah and invites barakah (blessings) into our food.

Yahya related to me from Malik, from Musa ibn Maysara, from Nu'aym ibn Abi Hind, from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When one of you eats, he should say: 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah). If he forgets to say it at the beginning, he should say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih' (In the name of Allah at the beginning of it and at the end of it).' Malik said, 'I have heard that Ayyub ibn Kharijah said that he heard his father say that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The Shaytan eats with the son of Adam in order to make it an unlawful thing for him.' Malik said, 'It has reached me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, let him say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih.' Malik said, 'When one of you finishes his meal, let him praise Allah, saying: 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah).' Ibn al-Qasim said, 'Malik said that when one of them finished his meal, he would say: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana Muslimin' (Praise be to Allah who fed us and gave us to drink and made us Muslims).' Malik said, 'When one of them finishes his meal, let him praise Allah, saying: 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah).' Yahya related to me from Malik, from Humayd, from Anas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Allah is pleased with His slave who praises Him for a mouthful and praises Him for a drink.'
