بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allah
Bismillah
When to Read
This fundamental dua is recited at the very beginning of eating any meal, signifying our reliance on Allah for every provision. It's a simple yet profound acknowledgment that all sustenance comes from Him.
How to Read
Utter 'Bismillah' clearly before you begin eating or drinking. It's also encouraged to say it before starting any permissible action, but its connection to food is particularly emphasized. If you forget at the beginning, say it as soon as you remember: 'Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirih' (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it).
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting 'Bismillah' before eating is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It invites Allah's blessing into the food and the act of eating. It also distinguishes a believer's meal from that of others, as Shaytan cannot partake in food over which Allah's name has been mentioned. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When any one of you takes food, he should say: 'Bismillah', and if he forgets to say 'Bismillah' at the beginning, he should say: 'Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirih' (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it).'' - Sahih al-Tirmidhi 1781 (Hasan)

Narrated by Umar bin Abi Salamah: I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). My hand used to wander all over the plate. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me: 'O boy, mention Allah's name (i.e., say Bismillah), eat with your right hand, and eat of the dish what is nearest to you.' My hand then used to wander all over the dish after that. - Sahih al-Bukhari 5376
