Before Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3767

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ

O Allah, bless us in it and feed us that which is better than it.

Allahumma barik lana fihi wa at'imna khairan minhu

When to Read

This dua is recited before breaking your fast during Ramadan or anytime you are about to eat a meal, especially one that you hope will provide you with sustenance and strength. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge that all provision comes from Allah (SWT) and to ask for His blessings upon the food and for even better provisions in the hereafter.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity before you begin eating. It is a supplication to Allah (SWT), so it should be said with humility and hope. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also taught us to eat with our right hand and to start with 'Bismillah' (I begin in the name of Allah).

Virtues & Benefits

When we ask Allah to bless the food we eat, we are acknowledging His grace and seeking His help to gain strength and energy from it. This dua not only asks for blessing in this world's food but also for something better in the next, showing our aspiration for Jannah. It trains us to be grateful for the blessings we have and to rely on Allah for all our needs, including nourishment.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'If Allah provides any one of you with food, he should say: O Allah, bless it for us, and give us (food) better than it. And if He provides him with milk, he should say: O Allah, bless it for us and increase us in it, for I do not know of anything that serves as food and drink but can be replaced by milk.'
