بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah
When to Read
This simple yet powerful invocation is meant to be said *before* you start eating any meal. It's especially pertinent when you find yourself facing a large spread or a tempting dish, and you feel the urge to dive in without restraint. Reciting 'Bismillah' before taking the first bite reminds you that even something as basic as eating is an act of worship when done with the right intention and with Allah's name.
How to Read
Simply say 'Bismillah' before taking your first bite. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this practice as a fundamental etiquette for eating. It's not about a long, elaborate prayer at this specific moment, but a conscious act of remembering Allah and seeking His blessing and guidance in your actions. The intention is key: to eat in a way that is pleasing to Allah, rather than driven by pure desire.
Virtues & Benefits
The primary benefit of reciting 'Bismillah' before eating is that it invites Allah's blessing (barakah) into your food and into your consumption. The Prophet ﷺ said: > It was narrated from 'Umar bin Abi Salamah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O young man, say Bismillah and eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you." (Sahih Muslim 2022). Furthermore, it serves as a constant reminder of Allah's presence, helping to curb excessive eating. When you begin with Allah's name, you are implicitly asking Him to help you eat only what is beneficial for your body and your deen, and to prevent you from overindulgence, which can lead to laziness, ill health, and a heart further away from remembrance. It trains you to approach all aspects of life, even the mundane act of eating, with mindfulness and gratitude.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Umar bin Abi Salamah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O young man, say Bismillah and eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you." Sahih Muslim 2022. Another narration states: "When one of you eats, he should say Bismillah, and if he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say Bismillah at the beginning of it and end of it." (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1858 - Hasan Sahih). This emphasizes the importance of the invocation in preventing Shaytan from sharing in the meal, which often leads to greed and overeating.
