بِسْمِ اللَّهِ.
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah.
When to Read
This simple yet powerful dua is recited just before starting to eat. It's not just a ritual; it's a conscious act of invoking Allah's blessings and assistance in every aspect of our lives, including the fundamental process of nourishment and digestion.
How to Read
Recite 'Bismillah' with sincerity, acknowledging that all strength and ability, including the ability to digest our food, comes from Allah. It's a brief invocation, easily remembered and consistently practiced. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to say 'Bismillah' before eating, drinking, and many other actions, seeking Allah's protection and blessing.
Virtues & Benefits
By saying 'Bismillah', we invite Allah's barakah (blessing) into our food and the process of its digestion. It reminds us that even something as basic as eating is an act of worship when done with the right intention and remembrance of Allah. This simple act can lead to better digestion and absorption of nutrients, as it's done under Allah's watchful care. The Prophet ﷺ also mentioned that Satan does not eat when 'Bismillah' is said, implying a spiritual protection alongside the physical blessing. (Sahih Muslim 2017)
