When to Read
This dua is recited before starting to eat any meal. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge Allah's provision and seek His blessing in the food that nourishes our bodies.
How to Read
Begin by saying 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) and then recite the full dua. It is recommended to say 'Bismillah' even if you forget at the very beginning, as the Prophet ﷺ taught.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua before eating acknowledges that all provision comes from Allah (SWT). It invokes His blessing ('Barakah') in the food, making it not just a source of physical sustenance but also a means of spiritual benefit. Asking for forgiveness ('Waghfir lana') and mercy ('Warhamna') shows our humility and dependence on Allah, seeking His acceptance and grace in all our actions, including the simple act of eating. The Prophet ﷺ also taught that if a person forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning of his meal, he should say it when he remembers (Sahih At-Tirmidhi 1858), indicating the immense importance of remembering Allah in every aspect of our lives.

Narrated by Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one will enter Paradise who has 'ishr' (meaning: harboring arrogant pride) in his heart." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, what if a man likes his clothes to look good and his shoes to look good?" He said: "Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty. 'Ishr' means dismissing the truth and looking down on people."
