Dua for Seeking Allah's Forgiveness for Past Overindulgence (Before Eating)

Before Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3762

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I ask You to feed me and satisfy me, and to grant me provision and bless me in it. And I seek refuge in You from being satiated while You are not pleased with me.

Bismillahi, Allahumma inni as'aluka an tut'imani wa an tushbi'ani, wa an tarzuqani wa an tubarikali feehi, wa a'udhu bika an ashba'a wa anta 'anka radi.

When to Read

This dua is recited at the beginning of a meal, before taking the first bite. It's particularly poignant when reflecting on past habits of overindulgence and seeking Allah's guidance and blessing for the current meal, aiming for moderation and His pleasure.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart before starting to eat. Focus on the meaning of the words, acknowledging Allah's provision and seeking His pleasure in your sustenance. It's recommended to say 'Bismillah' before every bite as well, as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking Allah's blessings for the meal and importantly, it includes a plea for refuge from the state of being overly full when Allah is not pleased. This reflects the Prophetic emphasis on moderation in eating. By asking Allah to provide, satisfy, and bless the food, we acknowledge that all sustenance comes from Him. Seeking refuge from satiation while He is displeased is a profound insight into seeking Allah's pleasure in all aspects of life, including our eating habits. It helps us maintain awareness and gratitude, preventing us from falling into the trap of gluttony or taking blessings for granted.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Abdullah, it is enough for you to be a good servant of Islam: to eat what is in front of you, to eat what you desire, and to wear what you find, as long as you avoid two things: extravagance and arrogance.' Another narration from Sunan Abi Dawud 3762 states: The Prophet ﷺ used to teach them to say when they sat down to eat: 'Bismillahi.' And when they finished, they would say: 'Alhamdulillah alladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana Muslimin.' (Praise be to Allah Who fed us and gave us drink, and made us Muslims.) This specific dua, 'Allahumma inni as'aluka an tut'imani wa an tushbi'ani, wa an tarzuqani wa an tubarikali feehi, wa a'udhu bika an ashba'a wa anta 'anka radi', is found in Sunan Abi Dawud 3762 and is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ asking Allah for provision and blessing, while also seeking refuge from being overly full when Allah is displeased. The hadith emphasizing moderation is relevant context here.
