Before Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3288

In the name of Allah. O Allah, make it righteous food, sustain us with it, heal us with it, remove its wrath, and bless us in it.

Bismillah. Allahumma-j'alhu ta'aman barran, waqfidh-hu, washfidh-hu, wa adh-hib sukh-tahu, wa barik lanā fih.

When to Read

This dua is recited before starting to eat. It's a beautiful way to begin a meal, acknowledging that even the simplest act of sustenance is a gift from Allah and asking for its blessings to extend beyond mere nourishment to health and well-being.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus before taking the first bite. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), and then continue with the rest of the supplication. It's recommended to eat with the right hand and follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a comprehensive request to Allah. By asking for 'righteous food' (ta'aman barran), we seek provisions that are pure and beneficial. The plea to 'sustain us' (waqfidh-hu) and 'heal us' (washfidh-hu) highlights our dependence on Allah for physical health and recovery. Asking to 'remove its wrath' (wa adh-hib sukh-tahu) implies seeking protection from any potential harm or ill effects the food might cause, whether due to imbalance or impurity. Finally, asking for 'blessing' (wa barik lanā fih) encompasses all forms of good, abundance, and divine favor in our sustenance.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Ja'far that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him words to say when eating: 'Bismillah. Allahumma-j'alhu ta'aman barran, waqfidh-hu, washfidh-hu, wa adh-hib sukh-tahu, wa barik lanā fih.' (This translation is an approximate meaning of the Arabic text).
