بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allah
Bismillah
When to Read
This essential dua should be recited just before starting to eat or drink. It's a reminder of Allah's blessings with every bite and sip.
How to Read
Recite 'Bismillah' clearly before you take your first bite or drink. If you forget, and remember while eating, say 'Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu' (بِسْمِ اللهِ أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ) – 'In the name of Allah at its beginning and at its end.' This also extends to using utensils, opening packages, or any action related to the meal.
Virtues & Benefits
This simple utterance is packed with blessings. It acknowledges Allah as the source of all sustenance and protects us from the Shaytan's participation in our food. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When one of you eats, he should say Bismillah. If he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376).
