Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2044

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا

O Allah, bless for us in what You have provided us, and forgive us and have mercy upon us.

Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waghfir lana warhamna

When to Read

This dua is recited before starting to eat, after mentioning Allah's name. It's a beautiful way to begin a meal, acknowledging Allah's provision and seeking His forgiveness for any shortcomings in expressing gratitude or for past sins.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and contemplation before you begin your meal. It's an act of seeking Allah's blessings and recognizing His mercy, turning even a simple act like eating into an opportunity for remembrance and seeking forgiveness.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses several beautiful aspects. Firstly, 'Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana' (O Allah, bless for us in what You have provided us) is a direct request for Allah's *barakah* (blessing) in our sustenance. This means seeking an increase in goodness, benefit, and a sense of contentment that goes beyond the physical amount. Secondly, 'waghfir lana' (and forgive us) acknowledges our human fallibility and our need for Allah's forgiveness, even during acts of receiving provision. It's a humble recognition that we may not always be perfectly grateful or may have sins that need erasing. Finally, 'warhamna' (and have mercy upon us) is a plea for Allah's encompassing mercy, a fundamental need for every believer. This dua, therefore, transforms the act of eating from a mere bodily need into a spiritual practice of gratitude, repentance, and seeking mercy.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'If anyone is given food, he should say: O Allah, bless for us in it and give us more than it.' He said: 'And if it is given by Allah, then whoever gives it to him, should say: O Allah, bless for him in it and give him more than it.' And the Commander of the Faithful 'Ali b. Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever eats something and then says: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, for it, and a complete nourishment, pure and blessed, and not to be renounced or substituted (by lack of it). Allah would forgive him what has passed (his sins) and would not impose upon him any hardship for what is to come.' And if anyone is given a garment and he wears it, he should mention Allah (in gratitude) and say: 'O Allah, I ask You for its good and the good of what it is made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it is made for.' And if anyone puts on a garment (to wear) and says: 'Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me without any might or power on my part,' Allah would forgive him his past and future sins. And if anyone eats and says: 'O Allah, bless for us what You have provided, forgive us and have mercy on us,' it would be said to him: 'The food has been blessed for you, and the striving for it has been compensated.' And if anyone drinks (milk) and says: 'O Allah, bless for us in it and give us more of it,' there is no food (as good) as it, and no drink (as satisfying) as it.
