اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا
O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us.
Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waghfir lana warhamna
When to Read
This dua is recited before partaking in any meal, acknowledging that the food itself is a blessing from Allah and that its preparation involved effort and resources. It's a moment to pause and reflect on the journey the food took to reach our tables, from the farmer to the cook.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and mindfulness as the food is about to be served or before you begin eating. It's an expression of gratitude for the sustenance provided and a recognition of Allah's bounty. It is ideal to recite this with a collective intention if eating with others, and individually if eating alone.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication embodies a comprehensive expression of gratitude and reliance on Allah. By asking for blessings ('barik lana'), we acknowledge that true abundance comes only from Him. Seeking forgiveness ('ighfir lana') reminds us of our shortcomings and dependence on His mercy. Finally, asking for mercy ('warhamna') encompasses all aspects of our need for Allah's compassion in this life and the next. It fosters humility and prevents arrogance, turning a simple act of eating into a spiritual reminder.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say when he broke his fast and when iftar was served: اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ وَتَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ 'O Allah, for You I have fasted and with Your provision I have broken my fast. Accept from me, indeed You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.' Another narration attributed to Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) mentions that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) broke his fast, he would say: اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي ثَمَرِنَا وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي مَدِينَتِنَا وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي صَاعِنَا وَمُدِّنَا، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَبَارِكْ لأَهْلِهِ 'O Allah, bless us in our fruits, bless us in our city, bless us in our measure (sa' and mudd). O Allah, bless us in it and bless for its people.' (This narration is found in Sahih Muslim 1156 and is specifically about blessings in produce and city, but the core sentiment of asking for blessings in provision is relevant). The dua provided in this entry, Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waghfir lana warhamna, is a general supplication for sustenance and is highly appropriate before eating.
