Dua for Remembering the Sacrifice of Those Who Prepared the Food

Before Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3261

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ

O Allah, bless for us in it and feed us something better than it.

Allahumma barik lana feehi wa at'imna khayran minhu

When to Read

Recited before partaking in any meal, especially when the effort of those who prepared the food is evident or when sharing a meal with others.

How to Read

This is a beautiful dua for when food is served. It acknowledges Allah's blessing upon the sustenance and implicitly, the efforts of those who brought it to our table. Utter it with sincerity, mindful of the bounty before you and the hands that worked to provide it.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a beautiful way to acknowledge Allah's blessings on our food. It also fosters gratitude, not just for the food itself, but for the people who labored to prepare and provide it. By asking Allah to bless the food and grant us something better, we are showing humility and recognizing that all good comes from Him. This fosters contentment and a deeper appreciation for the meal.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'When one of you eats, let him say: Allahumma barik lana feehi wa at'imna khayran minhu (O Allah, bless for us in it and feed us something better than it). And when one of you is given milk to drink, let him say: Allahumma barik lana feehi wa zidna minhu (O Allah, bless for us in it and increase us in it). For I do not know of anything that can replace food and drink except milk.' (Grade: Hasan)
