When to Read

This dua is recited when food is served or presented before eating. It’s a beautiful way to acknowledge the provision of Allah and the effort involved in making the meal possible, asking for its blessing and for even better sustenance in the future.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of mind as the food is about to be served. It’s a moment to pause and reflect, even if briefly. Some scholars mention that if you are invited to someone’s home, you can make dua for the host and for the food itself, making this dua a comprehensive expression of gratitude.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua invites Allah's blessings into our food, purifying it and making it beneficial for our bodies and souls. It reminds us that all sustenance comes from Allah, fostering humility and gratitude. By asking for 'better than it', we express our contentment with Allah's decree while still aspiring for more goodness, knowing that true blessings are from Him alone.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Mughaffal that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘There is no household that is provided with food, but it is blessed. If they have little, then a portion of it is sufficient for them; but if they have plenty, then it is measured for them. The blessing of Allah is in plenty. From this, we learn that Allah blesses all provision. If food is offered to one of you, he should take some of it, and if he is content, then it is good. If he is not content, then he has not thanked (Allah for it). Then he said: ‘O Allah, bless what You have provided us and feed us better than it.’
