Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1628

اللَّهُمَّ أَطْعِمْ مَنْ أَطْعَمَنِي وَاسْقِ مَنْ سَقَانِي

O Allah, feed those who feed me, and give drink to those who give drink to me.

Allahumma at'im man at'amani wasqi man saqani

When to Read

This dua is recited before starting to eat, especially when invited for a meal or when sharing food with others. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge the blessing of food and remember those less fortunate, implicitly reminding us of orphans and widows who may not have such provisions.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity before you begin your meal. It's an expression of gratitude and a prayer for those who have provided for you, extending that sentiment to the less fortunate.

Virtues & Benefits

This prayer is a reflection of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ profound empathy and generosity. By asking Allah to bless those who have fed and given us drink, we acknowledge our dependence on Him and His provision. More importantly, it cultivates a habit of remembering the less fortunate, like orphans and widows, who might be struggling to find their next meal. This practice nurtures compassion, discourages wastefulness, and fosters a sense of community and mutual support within the Ummah.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not refuse a gift, and he did not say it was unlawful (i.e. he accepted it). He said: 'O people, give to one another in charity, and if you are offered anything that you will accept, then accept it.' He also said: 'O Allah, feed those who feed me, and give drink to those who give drink to me.'
