Dua for Remembering Karbala's Thirst Before a Meal

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2044

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Bismillāh. Allāhumma bārik lanā fīmā razaqtanā wa qinā 'adhāban-nār.

When to Read

This dua is recited before starting any meal or drink. It serves as a reminder of Allah's blessings and the profound sacrifices made in history, particularly the thirst experienced by Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions at Karbala. Reciting this humble supplication before partaking in sustenance connects us to a deeper sense of gratitude and remembrance.

How to Read

Recite 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before beginning the dua. Say the full dua clearly and with sincerity. It is also sunnah to wash hands before eating if food requires it. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized eating with the right hand and with the food placed before oneself.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses gratitude for sustenance, seeking Allah's blessings upon the food, and protection from the Hellfire. It instills humility by reminding us that all provisions are from Allah. Remembering the thirst of Karbala while saying this dua amplifies the sense of thankfulness for the water and food we have, which were denied to the martyrs of Karbala. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever eats something, let him say: "O Allah, bless it for us and give us more than it." And whoever drinks, let him say: "O Allah, bless it for us and give us more than it."

Source & Authentication

Jabir reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: 'Verily, the devil is present with any one of you in everything he does. He is present even when he eats. So, if any one of you picks up a morsel after it has fallen, he should remove whatever adhered to it and should not eat it, and should not give it to the devil. When he finishes (his meal), he should lick his fingers, for he does not know on which of his food Allah the Most High has placed His blessing. And when he finishes drinking, he should lick his fingers. And when he finishes his prayer, he should say: 'O Allah, I ask Thee for the contentment which is followed by dissatisfaction and for the life of contentment after death and for the pleasure of looking at Thy Face and for the longing to meet Thee without any hardship and affliction and for the protection from the curse of the Fire and from the punishment. And he should say: Bismillah. When he eats, Allah, the Blessed and the High, says: 'Eat and increase.' And when he drinks, He says: 'Drink and increase.' And when he puts on clothes, he says: 'Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with it, and has given me power to wear it, and has provided me with it. And when he travels, he says: 'O Allah, make the way easy for us and shorten the distance for us.' And when he enters his house, he says: 'O Allah, I ask Thee for the good of entry and the good of exit, and the good of what is before us and the good of what is behind us. And grant us provision in it.' And when he wakes up at night, he says: 'Praise be to Allah Who brings back the soul and has kept it alive, and if it is His will, He would bring it back.'
