بِسْمِ اللهِ. اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا.

In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us, forgive us and have mercy upon us.

Bismillah. Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waghfir lana warhamna.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited before starting any meal. It's an acknowledgment of Allah's provision and a request for His forgiveness and mercy, reminding us that even the simple act of eating is an act of worship when done with the right intention and remembrance of our Creator.

How to Read

Begin by saying 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before taking the first bite, and then recite the full dua. This serves as a beautiful way to imbue the act of eating with gratitude and awareness of Allah's blessings. It's recommended to eat with the right hand and to begin from the part of the plate closest to you, following the Sunnah.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua before eating is a powerful reminder of Allah's immense blessings. It turns a mundane act into an opportunity for worship, fostering gratitude and humility. By asking for forgiveness and mercy, we seek to purify ourselves and our sustenance. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the one who eats does so with one gut, while the disbeliever eats with seven guts (Sahih al-Bukhari 5393). This highlights the spiritual dimension of eating for a believer, where even sustenance is a means of drawing closer to Allah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, is pleased with His servant when he praises Him for a morsel he eats, and thanks Him for a drink he takes.' (Sahih Muslim 2232). Another narration: 'When any one of you eats food, he should say: Bismillah (In the name of Allah). And if he forgets to say it at the beginning, he should say: Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirihi (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it).' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, Sahih). This specific wording, 'Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waghfir lana warhamna,' is found in various forms and is a comprehensive supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ, encompassing praise, gratitude, and seeking forgiveness related to provision.
