بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah
When to Read
Recited at the beginning of eating any food, even a single date. It's recommended to say it for yourself, and if eating with others, to remind them as well.
How to Read
Recite 'Bismillah' clearly before taking the first bite. This simple phrase invokes Allah's name and acknowledges His provision for every single morsel.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that Shaytan (Satan) eats with the one who does not say 'Bismillah'. By reciting it, we not only seek Allah's blessing in our food but also protect ourselves from Shaytan's participation and seek purification for the meal. It cultivates mindfulness and gratitude for every bite, reminding us that all sustenance is from Allah alone.
Source & Authentication
Narrated by Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, Satan is present with each of you in everything he does. So be present when you eat and do not let Satan be present with you.' Then he said: 'If a person says Bismillah, Satan will retreat. If he says Bismillah before eating, it will be for him for the entire meal.' (Related by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi, and declared Sahih by Al-Albani). Sahih Muslim (2017) also narrates from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'When one of you eats, he should eat with his right hand. When one of you drinks, he should drink with his right hand. For indeed, Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.' While this hadith doesn't directly mention 'Bismillah', the general principle of invoking Allah's name before actions is established. The more specific hadith from Bukhari (5376) states: 'When any one of you eats, he should mention Allah's name, saying 'Bismillah'.' In another narration: 'If one of you forgets to mention Allah's name at the beginning, he should say 'Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu' (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end)'.
