When to Read

Recited after finishing a meal, but the essence of remembering Allah while enjoying His blessings applies to the moment before eating as well. The Prophet ﷺ would make dua before and after eating, teaching us to acknowledge the Creator with every aspect of our lives, including the enjoyment of food.

How to Read

This specific dua is for *after* finishing a meal, as found in Sahih Muslim. However, the principle of gratitude and remembrance before eating is also emphasized. For instance, the Prophet ﷺ would often start with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah). The act of saying 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah) after the meal is a direct application of this hadith, acknowledging that all blessings, including sustenance, come from Him. When enjoying food, one should consciously remember that this delicious sustenance is a gift from Allah, reflecting on His mercy and power.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful expression of gratitude and recognition of Allah's perfection. By praising Allah after a meal, we acknowledge that He is the source of all blessings and sustenance. The Prophet ﷺ taught this dua as a means of seeking forgiveness, indicating that even our enjoyment of blessings should be accompanied by humility and a desire for purification. It reinforces the idea that every aspect of our lives, including eating, is an opportunity for worship and remembrance.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When he finishes eating, he says: Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise be to You! O Allah, forgive me.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5433). In another narration, Muslim recorded: 'When one of you finishes his food, let him say: Praise be to Allah who has satisfied us and given us water. It is a perfect satisfaction. And when one of you has completed a meal, let him say: Praise be to Allah, who has fed me this food and provided it for me without any might or power on my part.' (Sahih Muslim 206, though this version focuses on a slightly different wording of thanks). The essence is clear: acknowledge Allah's provision and perfection.
