Dua for Remembering Allah Before Eating

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5376

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

In the name of Allah

Bismillah

When to Read

This is the fundamental supplication to recite just before starting any meal. It's about acknowledging Allah as the provider of the food you are about to consume. It reminds us that even something as basic as eating is an act of worship when done with the right intention and remembrance of the Creator.

How to Read

Say 'Bismillah' clearly before you take the first bite. It's a simple yet powerful declaration of reliance on Allah and recognition of His bounty. If you forget to say it at the beginning, you can say it when you remember, even if you're midway through your meal.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that saying 'Bismillah' before eating prevents Shaytan (Satan) from joining you in your meal. He said: 'When any one of you is going to eat, he should say: Bismillah. If he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say when he remembers: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it).' This simple act transforms a mundane activity into an act of remembrance, fostering gratitude and preventing heedlessness. It's a shield against the whisperings of Shaytan who seeks to corrupt even our simplest habits.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you is going to eat, he should say: Bismillah. If he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say when he remembers: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it).' — Sahih Muslim 2015 (also found in Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 with slight variation in wording)
