Dua for Remembering Allah Before Eating

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5376

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

In the name of Allah

Bismillah

When to Read

This is recited before starting any meal, whether it's a main course or a snack. It's a fundamental practice to acknowledge Allah's provision before partaking.

How to Read

Simply say 'Bismillah' clearly before you begin eating. If you forget at the start, you can say it as soon as you remember, even during the meal. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us: > **Arabic:** إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِنْ نَسِيَ فِي أَوَّلِهِ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ > **Translation:** 'When any one of you eats, he should say Bismillah. If he forgets to say it at the beginning, he should say: 'Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu' (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).' > — Sunan Abi Dawud 3767 (Hasan) This shows the ease and mercy of Islam; a simple reminder can correct our oversight.

Virtues & Benefits

Saying 'Bismillah' before eating is more than just a ritual. It reminds us that all blessings come from Allah. The Prophet ﷺ also taught that when we say 'Bismillah,' Shaytan (Satan) is unable to eat with us. Conversely, if we forget, Shaytan shares in our food. This means our sustenance is blessed and protected from evil influence when we remember our Creator. Furthermore, this act cultivates gratitude and humility, recognizing that we are entirely dependent on Allah for every morsel we consume. It transforms a mundane act into an act of worship.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Umar bin Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him): I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). My hand used to move around the dish while eating. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me, 'O boy, say Bismillah and eat with your right hand and eat from what is in front of you.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376)
