Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2044

بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Bismillah, Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waqina 'adhaban-nar

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited at the beginning of any meal, whether it's a small snack or a full dinner. It's a practice the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to ensure our sustenance is blessed and we are protected from potential harm, including that which might affect us through our stomach.

How to Read

Begin by saying 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before starting to eat. Then, recite the full dua: 'Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waqina 'adhaban-nar'. It's meant to be said sincerely, with the intention of seeking Allah's blessings and protection. This simple act transforms a mundane meal into an act of worship.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua carries immense blessings. By asking Allah to 'barik lana' (bless us), we invite prosperity and goodness into our provision. The second part, 'waqina 'adhaban-nar' (and protect us from the punishment of the Fire), is a profound request for protection, not just in this life from physical ailments related to food, but also from the ultimate Fire of Hell. This teaches us to be mindful of our sustenance and its potential impact on our well-being, both worldly and hereafter.

Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When one of you enters his house, he should mention Allah the Exalted and Mighty. And when he eats, he should mention Allah the Exalted and Mighty. If he fails to mention Allah at the beginning of his meal, Satan shares the meal with him. But if he mentions Allah at the beginning, Satan cannot take anything from his meal." He (Jabir) said that he thought that he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A man's food was taken by Satan, but he did not mention Allah, and the food of Satan was taken by them, and they did not mention Allah. When they ate (food) which they had not mentioned Allah over, Satan took it. But when they mentioned Allah over (their food), Satan vomited what he had inside him." He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When any one of you eats food, he should say: 'Bismillah'. And if he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih' (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it)." Muslim’s version has it: "When one of you eats food, he should say: 'Bismillah'. If he forgets, he should say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih'." He also said: "O Allah, bless us in our provision and protect us from the torment of the Fire and make us content with what You have given us, and bless for us our provision." (The narrator, Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaibah, said: "The food which was not blessed, Satan shared with them.")
