بِسْمِ اللهِ
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah
When to Read
This simple yet profound dua is recited before beginning any meal. It's a reminder to commence our eating in Allah's name, seeking His blessings and protection over the food we consume and our bodies that process it.
How to Read
Utter 'Bismillah' clearly and with intention before taking the first bite. It is also recommended to say it before drinking and engaging in any permissible activity. This practice not only invokes Allah's name but also trains the heart to remember Him in all aspects of life, making even the mundane an act of worship.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting 'Bismillah' before eating is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It brings Allah's blessing to the food and safeguards us from Shaitan's involvement. A hadith narrated by Umar bin Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'O young boy, say Bismillah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.' Sahih al-Bukhari 5376, Sahih Muslim 2022. While this specific hadith doesn't directly mention stomach ailments, the general principle of seeking Allah's name for protection applies. By invoking Allah, we are essentially asking for His divine care over our bodies, including protection from any potential harm or discomfort arising from our meals.

Umar bin Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). My hand used to roam about in the platter. So, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: 'O boy, mention Allah's name, eat with your right hand and eat what is nearest to you.' Umar bin Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) further added: I have not seen him (the Prophet ﷺ) leaving these three things since I observed him. (Sahih Muslim 2022, Sahih al-Bukhari 5376)
