بِسْمِ اللَّهِ.
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah.
When to Read
This essential dua is recited before consuming any food or drink. It is particularly important to remember when the food's source might be uncertain, or if you are eating with someone whose intentions are not entirely pure, or if you are concerned about potential harm, whether physical or spiritual.
How to Read
Recite 'Bismillah' clearly before taking the first bite or sip. It is a simple yet profound act of seeking Allah's protection and blessing over the sustenance you are about to take. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this practice not just for the food itself, but as a recognition that all provisions come from Allah and that His name is a shield against all evil.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting 'Bismillah' before eating invokes Allah's protection over the food and drink. It prevents Shaytan (Satan) from partaking in the meal with you. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Indeed, Shaytan makes permissible for himself the food over which Allah's name is not mentioned.' (Sahih Muslim 2015). This simple utterance transforms a mundane act into an act of worship and a means of safeguarding yourself from unseen harm, ensuring the sustenance is pure and beneficial.
Source & Authentication
Narrated by Umar bin Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him): I was a boy in the care of Allah's Messenger ﷺ and my hand used to wander all over the dish. So Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to me: 'O boy, mention Allah's name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.' So I followed it afterwards. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376, Sahih Muslim 2022). In another narration of Muslim (2015), the Prophet ﷺ said: 'If one of you eats, he should say: 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah). If he forgets to say it before starting, then he should say: 'Bismillahi Awwalihi wa Akhirihi' (In the name of Allah at the beginning of it and at the end of it).' While the primary context of 'Bismillah' is general remembrance, the underlying principle of seeking Allah's protection applies universally, especially when there's a concern.
