Dua for Protection Before Eating

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5376

بِسْمِ اللهِ

In the name of Allah.

Bismillah

When to Read

This is the fundamental dua to recite before starting any meal, whether it's a light snack or a full feast. It's part of the Sunnah to invoke Allah's name before beginning to eat, to seek His blessing and protection over the food and its effects on our bodies. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this simple yet profound act, reminding us that even the act of eating is an ibaadah (worship) when done with the right intention and in accordance with his teachings.

How to Read

Simply say 'Bismillah' before you take your first bite. You can say it aloud or silently. It's a sign of gratitude and acknowledgment that all provisions come from Allah. The Prophet ﷺ also instructed us to say it when drinking, and it's understood to be a general principle for beginning any action, seeking Allah's help and presence. If you forget to say it at the start, you can say it when you remember, as the Prophet ﷺ taught: 'If one of you forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say: *Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirihi* (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it).'' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, graded Hasan Sahih by some scholars).

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting 'Bismillah' before eating carries immense blessings. It signifies our reliance on Allah and seeks His protection from any harm that might be in the food. It also earns us reward for following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When we eat without remembering Allah, Shaytan (Satan) is said to partake with us, making the food less blessed and potentially causing physical or spiritual harm. By saying 'Bismillah', we declare Allah's name over our food, warding off evil and inviting His blessings. As the Prophet ﷺ said: 'When one of you eats, he should say: *Bismillah*. If he forgets to say *Bismillah* at the beginning, he should say: *Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirihi*.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767). This teaches us the importance of remembering Allah in all our affairs, big or small.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ was given a dish of tharid (a type of stew with bread) and he started eating from its sides, and a Bedouin came and ate from the middle. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'This (Bedouin) has eaten with *Bismillah* (in the name of Allah).' If he had said *Bismillah*, then Shaytan would have eaten what was left.
