بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah
When to Read
This simple, yet profound, dua is recited at the very beginning of eating any meal or drinking anything. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to begin everything in Allah's name, and eating is no exception. It's a moment when we're about to receive a physical blessing – sustenance – and invoking Allah's name ensures that this blessing is protected and beneficial for us.
How to Read
Say 'Bismillah' clearly before taking the first bite or sip. It's a short invocation, but its significance is immense. It serves as a reminder that this food is from Allah, and we acknowledge His blessing. The intention behind it is crucial; it’s not just a verbal utterance but a conscious act of remembrance.
Virtues & Benefits
By saying 'Bismillah', you invite Allah's protection over your food and yourself. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When one of you eats, he should say Bismillah. If he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say: 'Bismillahi awwaluhu wa akhiruhu' (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end)'. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376). This implies that not saying it leaves the food vulnerable to Shaytan. Saying it invokes Allah's blessing, ensuring the food is pure and beneficial for your body and soul, and it keeps the Shaytan away from partaking in your meal. It's a powerful shield against physical and spiritual harm associated with our sustenance.

Narrated by Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The Shaytan is present with each of you in everything you do, and in all that you eat. So, when any one of you eats, he should say Bismillah. If he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say: Bismillahi awwaluhu wa akhiruhu (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).' — Sahih Muslim 2019 (similar wording found in Sahih al-Bukhari 5376)
