Dua for New or Unfamiliar Food: Asking for its Goodness and Protection from Harm

اللَّهُمَّ أَطْعِمْ مَنْ أَطْعَمَنِي وَاسْقِ مَنْ سَقَانِي

O Allah, feed whoever fed me and give drink to whoever gave me drink.

Allahumma at'im man at'amani wasqi man saqani

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited when someone is treated to food, especially if the food is unfamiliar or prepared by someone else. It's a beautiful way to express gratitude to both the host and Allah for the provision and to ask for reciprocal blessings upon the person who provided the meal.

It was narrated from Miqdam bin Ma'd Yakrib that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'No man ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. It is sufficient for the Son of Adam to eat a few morsels that would keep his back straight. If he must eat, then one third for his food, one third for his drink, and one third for his breath. And Allah does not look at the one who is bloated with food.' It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'If one of you is invited to food, he should accept. If he wishes, he may eat, and if he wishes he may leave.' It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet (ﷺ) did not eat at a table laden with fine bread until he departed from this world. And he did not see fine bread for him in three days until he departed from this world. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'If a food is given to one of you, he should eat it, and if he is invited, he should accept.' It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The Sign of the Hour are three: …' [and the hadith continued]. Abu Qilabah said: 'And it was said to me from Anas: the dua of the Prophet (ﷺ) when food was brought to him: Allahumma at'im man at'amani wasqi man saqani.' (O Allah, feed him who fed me, and give drink to him who gave me drink.)
