بِسْمِ اللهِ
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah
When to Read
This is the fundamental dua to recite before starting any meal, whether it's a light snack or a full feast. It's meant to be said just as you are about to begin eating.
How to Read
Say 'Bismillah' with sincerity as you pick up your utensil or reach for the food. It's a simple utterance, but its power lies in the intention behind it: acknowledging Allah as the source of this sustenance and seeking His blessing upon it. It's also a reminder to eat with awareness and gratitude, rather than mindlessly.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that saying 'Bismillah' before eating prevents Shaitan (Satan) from partaking in our food. In one narration, he said: 'When any one of you is eating, he should say Bismillah. If he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say it when he remembers: 'Bismillahi awwaluhu wa akhiruhu' (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5095). This act not only safeguards our meal from evil but also elevates it, making it a blessed provision. By invoking Allah's name, we consciously turn our meal into an act of worship, a means to strengthen our body for His obedience, and a constant reminder of His generosity, thus nurturing our Taqwa.

Narrated by Umar bin Abi Salamah: I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger ﷺ and my hand used to move around (the dish) in the platter. So Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to me: "O boy! Mention Allah's name, eat with your right hand, and eat of the dish whatever is nearest to you." And so, after that, I always followed this way of eating. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5095)
