Dua for Humility and Contentment Before Eating

Before Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3265

O Allah, make it a wholesome food, and make it a source of blessing, and make it a means to piety and faith.

Allahumma-j'alhu ta'aman hanee'an, waj'alhu barakatan, waj'alhu sababan lit-taqwa wal-iman.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited before partaking in any meal, whether it's a small snack or a large feast. It's a beautiful way to begin eating with mindfulness, acknowledging the blessings of the food and asking Allah to make it beneficial not just physically, but spiritually as well.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of mind before you start eating. It is a supplication asking Allah to transform the physical act of eating into an act of worship, a means of strengthening one's piety and faith. The emphasis is on the intention behind the supplication: seeking more than just nourishment, but spiritual growth.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua helps cultivate a sense of humility and gratitude for the sustenance Allah provides. By asking for the food to be a means of piety and faith, we acknowledge that even our basic needs can be a pathway to drawing closer to Allah. It shifts our perspective from mere consumption to a conscious act of seeking Allah's pleasure and benefit, transforming a mundane act into an opportunity for spiritual elevation. It fosters contentment, reminding us to be thankful for what we have, rather than desiring what we lack.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Al-Mundhir Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman Al-Ma'dani that he heard Ibn 'Abbas say: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'If you eat, say: O Allah, make it a wholesome food, and make it a source of blessing, and make it a means to piety and faith.'" (Da'if, but similar meaning conveyed in Hasan Hadith). *Note: While the chain for this specific narration is considered da'if, the sentiment is widely supported by the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) in other forms, and its practice is considered good by many scholars due to its beautiful meaning and alignment with Islamic principles of gratitude and seeking blessings in food.*
