Dua for Halal and Pure Sustenance Before Eating

Before Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3281

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَاقْفِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waqfina 'adhaban-nar

When to Read

This dua is recited before starting any meal. It's a beautiful reminder to acknowledge that all provision comes from Allah and to ask for His blessing in it, as well as seeking protection from the Hellfire, a consequence of heedlessness and ingratitude.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity before you begin eating. It's customary to begin with Bismillah ('In the name of Allah') even before reciting this specific dua, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed us to say Bismillah before eating and drinking. Wash your hands, sit respectfully, and face the qiblah if possible.

Virtues & Benefits

Asking Allah to bless the food we eat ensures that it becomes a source of strength for obedience and not a means to further sin. The request to be protected from the Fire is a profound reminder of our ultimate accountability and dependence on Allah's mercy, connecting even the simple act of eating to our Akhirah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you eats, let him say: Bismillah. If he forgets to say it at the beginning, let him say: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it).' He also said: 'O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3281. Graded Hasan by the publishers of Sunan Ibn Majah). This hadith highlights the importance of invoking Allah's name before eating and includes a comprehensive dua for blessing in provision and protection from Hellfire.
