Dua for Gratitude Before Eating

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2044

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and save us from the punishment of the Fire.

Bismillah. Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited right before starting to eat any meal. It's a moment to pause and acknowledge the immense blessing of food, recognizing it as a provision from Allah (SWT). It’s not just about the physical food, but also appreciating the effort that went into preparing it – from the farmer cultivating it, to the person who cooked it, and everything in between.

How to Read

Begin by saying 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) as you commence eating. Then, recite the full dua: 'Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar.' Say it with sincere intention, a mindful heart, and while facing the food. This practice brings barakah (blessings) to the meal and reminds us of our accountability to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua before eating ensures that the food is blessed. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this supplication, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging Allah's provision and seeking His protection. The plea 'wa qina 'adhaban-nar' (and save us from the punishment of the Fire) is a profound reminder of our ultimate purpose and the need for Allah's mercy in all aspects of our lives, including the sustenance we consume.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'There is no servant whom Allah has made responsible for a provision, and he says: Bismillah. Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar. – except that his provision will be blessed, and he will not be asked about its being lawful or unlawful, and if he were to die, he would enter the Fire (of Hell).' *(Note: The last part of the hadith explains the consequence of neglecting this dua when a person has been provided for, implying the immense value and protection it offers.)*
