Before Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3767

بِسْمِ اللهِ. اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ.

In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless what You have provided for us and provide us with something better than it.

Bismillah. Allahumma barik lana fihi wa at'imna khayran minh.

When to Read

This dua is recited just before starting to eat, acknowledging Allah's provision and seeking His blessing in the meal. It's a beautiful way to begin any meal, whether it's a simple date or a grand feast.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of mind. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before the dua itself, and then utter the words seeking Allah's blessing. It is recommended to recite it before taking the first bite.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua brings Allah's blessing (barakah) to the food, making it more nourishing and satisfying. It also cultivates a habit of gratitude and remembrance of Allah in our daily lives, turning a simple act like eating into an act of worship. This practice connects us to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was meticulous in his remembrance of Allah at all times.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no servant who says 'Bismillah' before eating, and Allah provides for him in his food or in his drink, saying to the Satan: 'Get out, for I have not given you any share in this food or drink.' And if he does not say 'Bismillah' before eating, and he is given food or drink, then Satan will share with him in it." (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767 - Hasan)
