بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allah
Bismillah
When to Read
This essential dua is recited before starting any meal, whether it's a light snack or a full course. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to begin everything with the name of Allah, and mealtimes are no exception. It's a simple yet profound reminder that all our blessings, including the sustenance we receive, come from Him. Reciting 'Bismillah' acknowledges this divine provision and invites Allah's protection and barakah (blessing) into our food.
How to Read
Simply utter 'Bismillah' with sincerity before taking your first bite. It's a declaration of reliance on Allah and an acknowledgement of His name. If you forget to say it at the beginning, the Sunnah is to say it when you remember, even in the middle of the meal: 'Bismillahi awwalih wa akhirih' (In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end).
Virtues & Benefits
Starting your meal with 'Bismillah' is a Sunnah practice that brings immense barakah. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When one of you eats, he should say Bismillah. If he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say Bismillah when he remembers it. Two devils will eat with him, but when he says Bismillah, the devils are separated from him and he is protected from them.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, Sahih). While this hadith specifically mentions protection from devils, the general principle of invoking Allah's name before eating is also linked to receiving pure sustenance and having our meals blessed. This purity and blessing can translate into a clearer mind and better focus, as our bodies and minds are nourished by food that is hallowed by the remembrance of Allah.
