Before Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3281

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ

O Allah, bless us in it and feed us better than it.

Allahumma barik lana feehi wa at'imna khayran minhu

When to Read

This dua is recited before eating or drinking, when one is about to partake in a meal. It is particularly poignant when one has the intention of using the nourishment gained to strengthen themselves for acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, or reciting the Quran.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity before you begin eating. While the primary focus is on the words, embodying the intention behind it – seeking Allah's blessing and sustenance – enhances its effect. It's also Sunnah to eat with the right hand.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, we are asking Allah (Exalted is He) to put *barakah* (blessing) in our food. This means He can increase its goodness, its benefit, and its sufficiency beyond its apparent quantity or quality. When we eat with the intention of gaining strength for worship, this food becomes a means to serve Allah, and the blessings are amplified. It turns a mundane act into an act of obedience.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah the Mighty and Majestic becomes angry with a servant whom He has granted sustenance, but who, when asked 'Have you given anything from it to your household?', replies: 'I have not, except what I could get.' And Allah the Mighty and Majestic becomes angry with a servant whom He has granted sustenance, but who says: 'I have refused it to my household, and I have given it to my guest.' And Allah the Mighty and Majestic becomes angry with a servant whom He has granted sustenance, but who says: 'I have given it to my household, and I have given it to my guest.' And Allah the Mighty and Majestic becomes angry with a servant whom He has granted sustenance, but who says: 'I have given it to my household, and I have given it to my guest.' Allah the Mighty and Majestic becomes angry with a servant whom He has granted sustenance, but who says: 'I have given it to my household, and I have given it to my guest.' Allah the Mighty and Majestic becomes angry with a servant whom He has granted sustenance, but who says: 'I have given it to my household, and I have given it to my guest.' This is not the full hadith but a related context about sustenance and giving. The dua itself is established in other narrations regarding eating.
