Dua for Divine Sustenance and Provision Before Eating

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2044

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ. اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

"In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

Bismillah. Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

When to Read

This dua is recited at the beginning of a meal, before taking the first bite. It's a beautiful reminder to acknowledge Allah's blessings and seek His protection with every meal we partake.

How to Read

Recite this dua clearly and with sincere intention before you start eating. It is recommended to say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before the rest of the dua.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encompasses two powerful requests: asking for Allah's blessing in the provision already given and seeking refuge from the Hellfire. By seeking blessing, we acknowledge that true sustenance comes from Allah and ask Him to increase its benefit and goodness. The second part is a profound plea for protection from the Fire, reminding us that even in the seemingly simple act of eating, we are still in need of Allah's mercy and safeguard against His punishment.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When any one of you eats food, he should say: 'Bismillah.' And if he forgets to say it at the beginning, he should say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih' (In the name of Allah, at the beginning and at the end)." Another narration: 'Abdullah b. Mughaffal reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to recite 'Bismillah' before every meal and to give thanks after every meal. He also said: 'If one of you forgets to recite 'Bismillah' at the beginning of the meal, he should recite: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih' (In the name of Allah, at the beginning and at the end)."
