بِسْمِ اللهِ
In the name of Allah
Bismillah
When to Read
Recite this short, powerful dua before you begin eating, whether you are alone or with others. It's the simplest way to invoke Allah's name and seek His blessings on your meal.
How to Read
Utter 'Bismillah' with sincerity before taking the first bite. It's not just a word, but an acknowledgment that all sustenance comes from Allah, and we seek His protection from any harm in it.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of remembering Allah's name before eating. He taught that when we say 'Bismillah', Shaytan (Satan) is unable to partake in our food with us. This ensures that the meal is pure and beneficial for us, free from the corrupting influence of the accursed one. Even when eating alone, this practice maintains the sacredness of the act and strengthens our connection with Allah.

Narrated by Umar bin Abi Salamah: I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger ﷺ and my hand used to wander all over the dish. So Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to me: 'O boy, mention Allah's name (i.e., say Bismillah), eat with your right hand, and eat from that which is in front of you.' And after that, I followed that practice all my life. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376)
