بِسْمِ اللهِ
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah
When to Read
This simple yet powerful dua is to be recited just before starting any meal, whether it's a light snack or a full dinner. It's a practice the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instilled in us to invoke Allah's name and seek His blessing over our sustenance.
How to Read
Recite 'Bismillah' with sincerity and focus as you are about to take your first bite or sip. It’s meant to be said aloud or in a low voice, acknowledging Allah’s presence and provision before partaking in the food.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to remind us that everything we consume is a blessing from Allah. By invoking His name, we seek protection not only from physical ailments that might arise from the food itself (like indigestion or sickness) but also from the harmful effects of Shaytan, who may seek to join us in our meals and cause discord or misuse. It purifies the act of eating, turning a mundane necessity into an act of worship and gratitude. This practice also ensures that the food we eat is blessed and beneficial for us, physically and spiritually.

Narrated Umar bin Abi Salamah: I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). My hand used to wander around the dish. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me, 'O boy! Mention Allah's name, eat with your right hand and eat from that which is in front of you.' And after that, I never used to do that.
