Bismillah
When to Read
This simple, yet powerful, dua is to be recited just before you begin eating, whether you're at a restaurant, a friend's house, or anywhere outside your own home. It's a reminder that even when we're not in our familiar surroundings, Allah's blessings are with us.
How to Read
Say 'Bismillah' before taking your first bite. It's a short phrase, easily remembered and whispered, setting a tone of gratitude and awareness of Allah's presence even when enjoying a meal prepared by others or in a public setting.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that saying 'Bismillah' before eating is a sunnah that invites Allah's blessing (barakah) into our food and protects us from the Shaytan. Abu Dawud narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'When any one of you is going to eat, he should say: Bismillah. If he forgets to say it at the beginning, he should say: Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirih (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, graded Hasan). This act also cultivates humility, reminding us that all sustenance comes from Allah.
