Dua Before Eating Food Prepared by Anyone, Including a Convert

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5376

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

In the name of Allah.

Bismillah

When to Read

This is the fundamental dua to recite before starting any meal, regardless of who prepared the food. It's a recognition that all sustenance comes from Allah, and we begin in His name, seeking His blessing upon the food and protection from any potential harm.

How to Read

Simply say 'Bismillah' aloud or silently before taking the first bite. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized its importance, teaching us to say it even if eating with Satan present, as saying 'Bismillah' repels him from sharing the meal.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting 'Bismillah' brings Allah's blessing ('barakah') to your food, ensuring it nourishes you properly and is a source of good. It also acts as a shield, protecting you and the food from any negative influences or harm, as taught by the Prophet ﷺ. It's a simple yet profound act of acknowledging Allah as the true Provider and seeking His grace in every aspect of our lives, including our meals.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When any one of you eats, he should mention the name of Allah, the Almighty. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, he should say: Bismillahi fee awwalihi wa akhirihi (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).' – Sahih al-Bukhari 5376. Another narration states: 'Verily, Satan considers it lawful to eat the food on which Allah's name is not mentioned.' – Sahih Muslim 2017
