بِسْمِ اللهِ
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah
When to Read
This is the fundamental dua to recite before beginning any meal or even taking a single bite. It’s a conscious reminder to start everything with Allah’s name, acknowledging His provision and our dependence on Him. Saying 'Bismillah' sets the tone for the meal, infusing it with barakah (blessing) and protecting us from Shaytan's interference, which often leads to waste and ingratitude.
How to Read
Recite this simple phrase clearly and audibly (or silently if in company where it might be awkward) just before you start eating. It’s meant to be an immediate and direct invocation. It’s a practice the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would never miss, even for a single date. Remember that this is more than just words; it's an act of remembering Allah and His blessings upon us.
Virtues & Benefits
The primary benefit of saying 'Bismillah' before eating is invoking Allah's blessing (barakah) upon the food. This blessing extends to making the food more nourishing and spiritually beneficial. Furthermore, it acts as a shield against Shaytan. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that if a person does not say 'Bismillah', Shaytan eats with him, and what Shaytan eats is often characterized by its impurity and lack of blessing, potentially leading to the food being wasted or causing harm. This simple act cultivates gratitude for the sustenance Allah has provided, especially crucial when food is scarce, reminding us not to take even a morsel for granted.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you is going to eat, he should say: Bismillah. If he forgets to say it before starting to eat, he should say it when he remembers: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirih'. (In the name of Allah at the beginning of it and at the end of it).' — Sunan Abi Dawud 3767. Graded Sahih by Al-Albani.
