Seeking Strength: Dua for Courage When Fear Grips You

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5909

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali

When to Read

This powerful supplication is a treasure trove for anyone facing fear, anxiety, or overwhelming situations. Recite it when you feel the weight of worry pressing down, when you're hesitant to face a challenge due to fear of failure, or when you feel a lack of confidence. It's particularly relevant when dealing with stressful situations, before confronting something daunting, or simply as a daily practice to build inner resilience.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincere conviction, visualizing Allah's protection surrounding you. Raise your hands as you supplicate, a gesture of humility and earnestness. Speak from your heart, understanding the meaning of each phrase you utter. Make it a habit, reciting it both in moments of need and as a proactive measure to strengthen your reliance on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct plea to Allah for protection against deep-seated emotional and practical burdens that fuel fear. By seeking refuge from 'distress and sorrow' (al-hammi wal-hazani), we acknowledge that true peace comes from Him. Asking protection from 'incapacity and laziness' (al-'ajzi wal-kasali) empowers us to take action. The specific mention of seeking refuge from 'cowardice' (al-jubni) directly addresses the root of fear-based inaction, while protection from 'stinginess' (al-bukhli) reminds us that true wealth is in generosity and trust in Allah. Finally, seeking refuge from 'debt and being overpowered' (ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali) covers tangible fears that can shake our stability. Reciting this regularly cultivates Taqwa (God-consciousness) and fosters a courageous spirit rooted in divine support.
