Seeking Allah's Protection from the Torment of the Grave

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 589

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-mahya wal-mawat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-matham wal-maghram.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite, particularly during the Tashahhud (the final sitting) of our prayers, before the taslim (the final salutation). It's also beneficial to remember and make this dua at other times, especially when feeling anxious about the unseen realities, including the grave, or when seeking general protection from trials. Reciting it consistently can bring peace of mind by actively seeking Allah's refuge from fearsome realities.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, understanding the profound meaning of seeking Allah's protection. Focus on each phrase, visualizing Allah's mercy shielding you. Utter it clearly during the Tashahhud, making it a central part of your supplication. This dua is best recited after the first Tashahhud in a four-rak'ah prayer, or in the final Tashahhud of any prayer, as it's a specific supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ to be made at that point.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua offers comprehensive protection by seeking refuge in Allah from some of the most significant trials and torments we may face: the torment of the grave (Azab al-Qabr), the trials of the Antichrist (Dajjal), the tests of this life and the hereafter (fitnat al-mahya wal-mawat), and the burden of sin and debt. By seeking refuge from the torment of the grave, we are actively addressing a source of deep-seated anxiety about what lies beyond this world, thereby fostering peace of mind in this life. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would frequently seek refuge in Allah from these matters, as indicated in numerous authentic hadith.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Fire, and he used to seek refuge in Allah from the trial of the Dajjal and the trial of life and death. And he used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the sin and the debt.' Someone said: 'The Dajjal's trial is worse than the torment of the grave, and the torment of the Fire is worse than the Dajjal's trial.' (Sahih Muslim 589).
