Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

There is no might nor power except with Allah.

La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

When to Read

This profound declaration of reliance on Allah can be recited in various situations, reflecting its comprehensive meaning: * **Upon hearing the Adhan:** When the mu'adhdhin calls "Hayya 'alas-Salah" (Come to prayer) and "Hayya 'alal-Falah" (Come to success), we respond by saying "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah." This acknowledges that we cannot fulfill these great acts of worship or achieve success without Allah's help. (Sahih Muslim 385) * **When facing difficulties or trials:** When you feel overwhelmed, powerless, or in need of Allah's intervention, reciting this *dhikr* reminds you that true strength and ability come only from Him. * **When leaving the house:** The Prophet ﷺ taught us a *dua* for leaving the house which includes seeking Allah's protection and guidance. While "Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alal-Lah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" is a specific *dua*, reciting "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" alone can still bring a sense of reliance and peace before venturing out. * **As general remembrance (dhikr):** It is a beautiful phrase to ponder and repeat at any time, deepening your connection with Allah and your understanding of His absolute sovereignty.

How to Read

Reciting "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" isn't just about saying the words; it's about internalizing their deep meaning. When you recite it: * **Understand the meaning:** Reflect on what it truly means: that all power, all ability, all strength, and all change belong to Allah alone. You are acknowledging your own weakness and His absolute strength. * **Recite with sincerity:** Say it with a humble heart, recognizing your utter dependence on Allah for every aspect of your life. * **Reflect on your situation:** Connect the *dhikr* to whatever challenge or need you are facing. If you are struggling, remember that only Allah can change your situation. If you are succeeding, remember that it is only by His power. * **Pause and ponder:** There's no need to rush. Allow the words to sink in, letting them transform your perspective and increase your reliance on Allah.
