Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5425

"O Allah, I take refuge in You from worry and grief, and I take refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I take refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I take refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men."

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal hammi wal hazan, wa a'udhu bika minal 'ajzi wal kasal, wa a'udhu bika minal jubni wal bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid dayni wa qaharrir rijal.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking protection from some of the most common and debilitating emotional and practical burdens in life. By seeking refuge in Allah from worry (hamm) and grief (hazan), we are asking for His divine intervention to ease our hearts and minds. Protection from helplessness ('ajz) and laziness (kasal) helps us to be more proactive and effective in our lives. Seeking refuge from cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (buhl) strengthens our character, making us braver and more generous. Finally, asking for protection from overwhelming debt (ghalabatid dayn) and the subjugation of men (qaharrir rijal) is a plea for financial freedom and respect, saving us from immense hardship and humiliation. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), signifying its importance.
