Dua for Strength to Navigate the Anxiety of Sudden and Unexpected Loss

Anxiety & Distress
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3639

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya h ukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kit abik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabia'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

Source & Authentication

A narration from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'There is no one who suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabia'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. (except that) Allah will take away his anxiety and grief, and replace them with relief.' It was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He replied: 'Yes, it is essential for whoever hears them to learn them.' (Related by Ahmad and graded Hasan by scholars for its chains of narration)
