Dua for Strength to Face the Fear of the Unknown Future

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijali.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, believing that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate controller of all affairs and the best one to turn to for help. Raise your hands as you would in supplication, face the Qiblah if possible, and focus on the meaning of the words. Understand that you are asking Allah to protect you from specific types of distress and weakness that often stem from fearing the unknown. Repeating it regularly can help build resilience and a stronger reliance on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his Companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), offers comprehensive protection. It seeks refuge from mental and emotional burdens (distress and sorrow), seeks protection against personal failings (helplessness and laziness), guards against character flaws that can lead to regret (cowardice and stinginess), and asks for deliverance from overwhelming external pressures (debt and being overpowered). By reciting this, we acknowledge our limitations and Allah's infinite power, finding peace in His divine plan and strength to navigate life's uncertainties.

Narrated Abu Bakr: I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “O Messenger of Allah, you have become dearer to me than my father and mother.” He said, “This is a matter of pure faith.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication that I should say in the morning and in the evening.” He said, “O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who knows the unseen and the seen, verily I ask You in the same way as my asking you for this prayer of mine, and I ask You by that which if You willed You would not give me, either the good of this world or the good of the Hereafter. O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Great Throne, Lord of the winds, Lord of the birds, Lord of the earth and all that is in it, Lord of the dawn, Lord of the darkness, the Knower of the hidden and all that is manifest, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. I ask You that You make the fire (of Hell) pleasant and good for me, and that You make safe for me my dwelling in the grave and in the subsequent abodes, and that You keep me from the evil of the rich and the poor. O Allah, I ask You that You make me pleased with Your decree, and that You make my sustenance a blessing in what You have destined for me, and protect me from the evil of what You have hastened and what has been delayed. O Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the Knower of the unseen and the seen, verily, the Lord of all things and their Sovereign, I bear witness that there is no god but You, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of the devil and his temptations, and from the evil of those who heap evil upon us.” (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.) And when you wake up in the morning, say: (O Allah, grant me health in my body. O Allah, grant me health in my hearing. O Allah, grant me health in my sight. There is no god but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. There is no god but You.) And say these three times in the morning, and say them three times in the evening.
