Dua for Strength to Break Free from Negative Self-Talk and Insecurity

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 925

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all that You dislike. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of character, deeds, and desires.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhidik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a'mali wal ahwa'i.

When to Read

Recite this dua frequently, especially when you find yourself dwelling on negative thoughts, feeling insecure, or engaging in harsh self-criticism. It's a powerful supplication to seek Allah's protection from internal struggles and detrimental habits.

How to Read

Raise your hands in supplication as you would during prayer. Utter the words with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of seeking Allah's protection. It is best recited after the obligatory prayers or at any time you feel the need for divine support against your inner battles.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive shield against various forms of spiritual and psychological distress. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge His ultimate power to protect us from losing His favors, from afflictions that can arise unexpectedly, and from His displeasure. Crucially, it asks for protection from 'evil of character, deeds, and desires,' which directly addresses the root causes of negative self-talk and insecurity. When we feel our character is flawed, our actions are wrong, or our desires are leading us astray, it often fuels insecurity. This supplication aims to purify our inner state and outward actions.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah in these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhidik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a'mali wal ahwa'i.' (Sahih Muslim 925)
