Dua for Relief from the Anxiety of Not Being Able to Fulfill Responsibilities

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, indeed I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abd-uka, ibnu 'abd-ika, ibnu amat-ika, nasyati biyad-ik, madin fiyya hukm-uk, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'-uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafs-ak, aw anzaltahu fi kitab-ik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalq-ik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'ind-ak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana Rabi'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers immense relief by shifting our focus from our perceived limitations to Allah's infinite power and wisdom. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'spring of the heart,' we are seeking spiritual renewal and peace. The Qur'an itself is a source of guidance and comfort, and this dua asks for that benefit to be actively applied to our emotional state. It transforms worry into trust (tawakkul) and anxiety into a deeper connection with our Creator, helping us to face our responsibilities with renewed strength and perspective.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn Masud: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If anyone recites the following two verses from the last part of Surat Al-Baqarah at night, it will be sufficient for him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4208). The following dua is attributed to the Prophet (ﷺ) as a means of seeking relief from distress. It's found in various collections, with its authenticity and specific attribution sometimes debated by scholars regarding the exact wording in relation to the Prophet's direct utterance. However, the essence of seeking refuge in Allah's names and making the Qur'an a source of peace is deeply rooted in the Sunnah. This specific wording is widely recognized and recommended for its comprehensive nature in seeking relief from worry and anxiety. Allah knows best.
