Dua for Relief from the Anxiety of Missing Out (FOMO)

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the reversal of the safety You have granted, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that which angers You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from them.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fu'jaati niqmatik, wa jamee'i sakhatik, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minha.

When to Read

This dua is incredibly relevant for the modern age, where social media bombards us with images of what others are doing. When you find yourself scrolling through feeds and feeling a pang of anxiety, comparing your life to others, or worrying that you're missing out on experiences, recite this dua. It's a powerful way to ground yourself in Allah's protection and shift your focus from what you perceive you lack to gratitude for what you have.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus. Raise your hands as you do, as is customary when seeking refuge with Allah. Understand the meaning of each phrase and truly ask Allah to protect your heart and mind from the distress that comparison and FOMO can bring. Make it a regular practice, especially when you feel that familiar unease creeping in.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection, asking Allah to shield us from the loss of His favors, the decline of our well-being, His unexpected retribution, and His displeasure. By seeking refuge in Allah from these, we acknowledge that true contentment and security come only from Him. This directly combats the root of FOMO – the fear of losing out on worldly gains or experiences. It reminds us that our ultimate gain is in pleasing Allah and preserving His blessings, not in accumulating more or experiencing everything the world offers.

Source & Authentication

A man asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ): 'What should I say?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the loss of Your blessings, the reversal of Your favour, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all Your displeasure.' He asked again: 'O Allah's Messenger! What should I say?' He replied: 'Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of my faculties, the vanishing of my health, the suddenness of my punishment, and all Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from (the evil of) them.' The narrator then mentioned the same wording as above (from 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings...').
